The WELL Build- ing Standard, a comprehensive approach to human health and wellness related to the built environ- ment, looks at seven diferent categories – includ- ing air quality, ftness, nourishment and comfort, among others – and assesses the impact of each cat- egory on the space's users. For example, a WELL-certifed space examines how lighting afects the user's circadian rhythm and adjusts the lighting structures to maximize health benefts, such as improved sleep patterns, which ul- timately infuence productivity. By taking a holistic view of the workspace – from its environmental im- pact to its business impact to its health impact – a company can create a more efective, engaging and fulflling environment for its employees. The move toward wellness is a natural next step in the evolution of engaging ofce environments. For years, many building owners, developers and landlords have clearly heard the cry for more com- petitive workspaces and have created environments that address the ever-changing needs of the work- force. In appealing to the environmentally con- scious, many building owners pursued LEED certi- fcation to reduce their impact on the environment and create places where people were proud to work. As the workforce began to ask for more lifestyle amenities, developers and landlords incorporated resort-like conveniences, such as workout and rec- reation facilities, outdoor workspaces and cafés, into their properties and ofce campuses. When corporations realized ofce space could be designed to promote engagement and increase employee pro- ductivity, landlords increased tenant improvement allowances to allow for the development of creative ofces. Buildings must now ofer ways for employers to improve the health of the workforce, and the WELL Building Standard an- swers that call. According to the numbers, of- fce wellness initiatives are work- ing. A recent study by CBRE re- ports 92 percent of employees said their WELL-certifed workspace has created a positive efect on their health and well-being, with 94 percent reporting a positive impact on their busi- ness performance. Companies are seeing the infu- ence that health and wellness initiatives, such as the WELL Building Standard, have on their bottom lines. Most telling is that 90 percent of those surveyed said they would not go back to their old ways of working. As companies continue to see the positive and tangible impact from human-centric workspac- es, building owners and developers must adapt, and WELL certifcation is next on the punch list. DEVELOPING WORKSPACES THAT ATTRACT AND RETAIN TALENT The kitchen at Goodman Birtcher in Irvine, Calif., provides an opportunity to socialize and eat healthy. Open spaces and lounge areas can provide an ideal environment for collaboration. On-site ftness facilities are another amenity that has become a priority to companies concerned with health and wellness.
