A number of innovative entrepreneurs have recently discovered the strategic advantages to locating in San Bernardino County. WISErg Corporation uses patented bio-technology processes to convert landfill-bound food scraps into a highly-productive liquid fertilizer. The firm's leadership chose Colton, located in the central area of the region, for its expansion, working proactively with the San Bernardino County Economic Development Agency and GoBIZ at the Governor's office of Economic Development. The Economic Development team connected the company to resources that include CalRecycle and the State Board of Equalization on potential loans and state tax credits. WISErg is also one of the CA Competes tax credit recipients awarded $1.5 million in 2016. Another leading-edge company to watch is Ampac USA. This designer and manufacturer of advanced water purification systems relocated from Los Angeles County to Montclair, on the western edge of San Bernardino County. Their advanced water purification systems are built to solve the most complex water purification, water provisioning, wastewater treatment and seawater desalination challenges in the most extreme environments across the planet. The new Montclair facility will support Ampac USA's manufacturing functions, providing a smoother, more efficient process. The County's Economic Development team provided Ampac with market and demographic information as well as facilitating meetings with GoBIZ, Southern California Edison and other business partners to discuss programs and incentives. Innovative Manufacturers Lead Growth in San Bernardino County In addition to some of its innovative manufacturers, the County continues to attract traditional industries such as plastics, food and furniture. Arden Companies, a manufacturer of outdoor living products and accessories, relocated to Victorville in the High Desert. From this location, Arden gains a larger West Coast manufacturing footprint, further accommodating its increased production and warehousing. Arden also cited the support it received from the Victorville community and San Bernardino County Economic Development Agency as important to its move. Beyond real estate costs, these firms, among others, look to the County as a choice location for business because of its 900,000-strong skilled and available workforce, affordable quality of life and access to a world-class transportation infrastructure. Moreover, firms such as Arden can leverage close proximity to a Southern California consumer population of almost 23 million. While it is important to work with these new businesses as they grow, the County also recognizes its role in supporting the needs of its existing manufacturing base. The newly-opened Industrial Technical Learning Center, located on the campus of California Steel in Fontana in San Bernardino County, trains almost 2,000 workers each year in advanced manufacturing, advanced transportation, and logistics, energy and utilities. To better tailor programs for what the industry needs now and in the future, the Center's course designers watch job and trade demand in the region and work proactively with existing businesses to customize coursework. Government funding provides the programs at no cost to employers and employees making the Center an immense benefit to both existing and new companies. To learn more about the County's business advantages, make plans to be part of the 1,000 business leaders who attend the annual State of the County event. This year's event will take place on March 8 in the City of Ontario. More information is at www.sbcountyadvantage.com.
